The Market

Our language school has several activities planned for the students each week. There is usually a movie night, a round-table discussion (this week was natural medicine), a group dinner of traditonal Mayan food, and an excursion on the weekend. This past weekend we took a trip to the market of Santa Clara and it was unbeleivable. There were about 100 venders all set up in a central square, selling every kind of fruit, vegetable, fish, and livestock you can imagine. It was beautiful. There is no such thing as a supermarket or grocery store in San Pedro or within the Lake region. Everyone shops daily at the market only for what they need for three meals and everything that is sold there is produced no more than 50 miles away. Its nice knowing that your food is fresh and knowing exactly where it came from. As opposed to at home, where food has been grown on the other side of the counrty or on another continent, processed extensively, overpackaged, and shipped to your supermarket over a span of weeks. This way of life is better for the local environment, the world at large and individual health.
